Chapter Eleven

Gardar

Freedom.

It wasn’t something I ever thought about or even noticed until I didn’t have it anymore. But as I glided through the open ocean with June pressed tightly against me, I couldn’t help but smile. There was still plenty of danger ahead and behind us, but I was free again.

We swam with the current underwater until I was sure we wouldn’t be visible from land, then I cautiously brought my mate to the surface where she could breathe the natural air again.

She spit out the breathing tube, and I could see that her eyes were wide inside the mask she wore.

“Oh my God, Gar! That was incredible. I’ve never moved so fast underwater. It was like being in a car. Or a submarine, I guess, but so much better.”

I laughed and held her tight, lifting her clear of the large waves. I was still aware of the wound in my side, but I felt so good, so excited to be free, and anxious to get back home that the ever-present dull ache was barely noticeable.

“I’m glad you like it, beautiful. It would make travel on my planet particularly unpleasant for you if you didn’t.”

Her cheeks turned a delicious light pink when I called her beautiful, but her expression immediately turned serious when I spoke of my home.

“Do you really want me to go back with you? Will I even be able to survive there?”

They were questions I’d asked myself a hundred times over the past few days, and I still didn’t have any good answers. Except one.

“I don’t just want you to go back with me.” I lifted her until our faces were nearly touching. “I need you. As much as I need water. As much as I need to swim and be free, I need you.”

“But how will I live? I assume you live underwater, right?”

“We have some structures on land as well. Mostly ceremonial temples and altars built on the islands that we claim as part of West Velnara.”

“West Velnara?” She looked confused and happy at the same time. “It sounds so pretty when you say it. That’s the name of your, um, country? State? Home?”

“West Velnara is home. We’re at war with our cousins from East Velnara because of these.” I nodded down to the small container that she’d been clutching tightly to her chest the entire time.

“Because of Myrtle?!”

“Because these… these turtles… That’s what you call them here? They have gone extinct on my planet, and the entire ecosystem is starting to collapse without them. I intend to catch some with these nets and take them through the portal with us. There are so many here, and it could be just the thing my people need to end our senseless war.”

“I understand,” she nodded, a faint line appearing between her eyes as she looked down at her turtle and then to the nets I was carrying. “There are a lot of species going extinct here on Earth, too. Including some of the larger turtles. I wouldn’t normally advocate capturing them, but I will for you.
